| From NCT's President, Kathy Magni
I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season. I was hoping all the Christmas carols on the radio would help get those Titanic tunes out of my head. What a remarkable achievement our fall presentation of the musical was for NCT! Audiences and critics raved about the quality performance we put on. Kudos to Mark, Chris, the production team and, of course, our fabulous cast. It was certainly a production for which we should all be proud.
By the time you read this, a group of us will have performed in our second annual concert for New Year's Needham. Rehearsals for the Cinderella panto have been underway for several weeks now, and production has already begun for our spring show, Arsenic and Old Lace. It's been a very busy off-season. Hope to see many of you at the panto performance or auditions for Arsenic.
Happy New Year! Kathy |

A Titanic Family Album |
|
It's not all rehearsals, song cues and hitting your mark at NCT -- there's backstage down-time, too. Here's a few random shots from those parts of the vessel that voyagers rarely get to see.
The ship's kitchen crew hams it up between meals -- what time is High Tea, anyway?
From left to right, Leeta White, Sharon Kivnik, Angela Mirrer, Paul Murphy, Kathy Magni and Cynde Hartman.
Looking great for a cruise -- gentlemen know that means getting your facial hair just right (from the left, Chuck Jacob, Jim Pugh, Marty West, Joel Hersh, Michael Fay).
Ladies, meantime, focus on their hats (from the left, Julia Lipman, Katie Higgins and Elaine Hom).
No trans-Atlantic passage can be considered First Class without the help of a top-notch team of makeup artists (from the left, Emily and Carla Verschoor-Kirss and Jane Willshire-Tempesta).
Why is this man smiling?
You decide: is it coincidence or by choice that the Titanic's Captain Smith (Lonnie Powell), is standing so close to an exit.
Or perhaps he's waiting for feedback from director Mark Usher (below).

The Show Must Go On
Worthy Warblers Whip Winter Weather Wipeout |
This was supposed to be a rather boring little article about 14 NCT members who spent the final Sunday afternoon of 2008 rehearsing for a New Year's Eve concert and then performing popular show tunes in front of a packed house at the Episcopal Church for the New Years Needham festival.
Then came the New Year's Eve snowstorm, with howling winds and temperatures hovering near zero. One by one, vocalists with the longest commutes called to express regrets at not being able to attend. Undaunted, a dwindling troupe of six remaining singers joined their accompanist, Caitlin Holland, at Jeremy and Fiona White's Needham home. What originally had been planned as a brush-up prior to that evening's performance turned into a whirlwind 90-minute production session. They totally revamped the program, scrapping a half-dozen songs ("We're missing a tenor -- can we still do this number?" "Anyone able to handle the harmonies in this piece?") while adding five new ones. Their freshly packaged song list in hand, and dressed to kill, they braved the elements and set off for the church.
Although the crowd was smaller than originally hoped (about 45 people), the audience thoroughly enjoyed the show and were blissfully unaware of the chaos that preceded it. Many thanks to our performers -- Caitlin, Jeremy, Fiona, Sharon Kivnik, Jim Pugh, Dan Moore and Kathy Magni -- for representing NCT so well! |

News Note Long-time NCT member Whitney (Cohen) Avalon in December won a Channel 101 Best Actress award for her work on the Internet sitcom, Making Mistakes. Although a "Channy" doesn't carry the same clout as an Emmy, Tony or Oscar, it's still quite an achievement -- especially since Whitney snagged this honor less than 10 months since moving to LA to pursue acting.
Her association with the Channel 101 folks also provided an immediate side-benefit. Whitney was invited to meet with musician/comic actor Jack Black (School of Rock, Kung Fu Panda). He had been seeking a female singer to join him in a duet on the Spike Video Game Awards -- and Whitney got the gig!

A Final Word Titanic thank-you from the show's producer, stage manager and costume designer, Heather Daley

As we look back at 2008, I reflect on our wonderful production of Titanic: the Musical. It was a privilege to work with such a talented cast and production team, whose collaborative effort brought this brilliant show to life. Feedback from audience members says it all.
"The BEST show NCT has ever done."
"This was better than some professional theatre."
"The Direction was superb."
"The cast was amazing."
The sole negative comment we heard was about how cold it was in the auditorium during two of the performances. Though some joked we were trying to make the audience feel like they were aboard the Titanic, the problem was beyond our control -- the school ran out of oil. Despite this, the show was still a huge success.
None of this would have been possible without the dedicated members of the design team who spent countless hours creating, measuring, building, lighting, sewing, wiring and painting for this production. Thanks to Sarah Roth, Chris Carda, Sharon Kivnik, Kathy Magni, Jane Willshire and Mark Still for bringing "the largest moving object in the world" to life.
The technical crew worked tirelessly behind the scenes, building, painting, moving set pieces, applying make-up, organizing props and playing sound effects. Thanks to Jeff, Chris S, Leeta, Annie, Ashley, Vicky, Grace, Sarah, Michael, Everado, Eric, Laura, Padraic, Julie, Carla, Jeremy, Jim, Carolyn and Craig for all they did backstage. Thanks, too, to Kathi Cotton and Jill Owens, my co-producers and Aaron Spence, my co-stage manager, for helping the show run smoothly and making my life SO MUCH easier. One of the reasons we chose Titanic as our fall musical, was its glorious score. We knew the right person to bring this to life was Chris Roppola. He set a very high standard in the cast's vocal performances and assembled talented musicians to accompany them. Thank you, Chris for all your work in bringing Titanic to fruition.
Lastly, thanks to our directing team of Kevin Morin (Assistant Director) and Mark Usher (Director and Choreographer). Kevin volunteered his time to work on this show and, from the beginning, was an integral part of the concept of the show. Thanks to Mark's dedication, vision and creativity, Titanic was the best show NCT had ever produced. For that, we are forever grateful.
Heather
